Child–robot interaction: designing robot mediation to facilitate friendship behaviors

This research explored if a social robot would play role in facilitating the development of friendship between young children while they engage playful learning. Grounded child–robot interaction and child literature, we instantiated four sessions triadic activities among two robot, where mediated children’s collaborative interactions. There were types robot-mediated (Conversational Tablet assisted) with each type having session taking approx. 20 minutes, depending on children. The deployed ten (aged five to six) an after-school program rural public school U.S. twice week for weeks. We video-recorded later annotated these recordings analysis. pair was observed terms behavioral categories (liking, togetherness, parity, agreement, co-construction). results showed that both conversational tablet-assisted mediation contributed complementarily
